British holidaymaker, 25, dies after being smashed against rocks at Spanish beach

The 25-year-old Brit went into cardiac arrest after he smashed against the rocks on the secluded Percheles Beach on the Costa Calida in Mazarron in southeastern Spanish region Murcia.

A British holidaymaker has reportedly died following a horrific accident at a Spanish beach after he was dashed against rocks and went into cardiac arrest.

The 25-year-old went into cardiac arrest after smashing against rocks, with two companions quickly raising the alarm before he was pulled out of the water by locals. While emergency responders raced to the area and health professionals desperately tried to revive him, they were unable to do so and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy happened just after 4pm on Wednesday at the secluded Percheles Beach on the Costa Calida in Mazarron, in the southeast Spanish region of Murcia.

The beach is accessible by an unpaved road and the nearest town is Canada de Gallego. Authorities have not yet confirmed the nationality of the man who died, but it has been confirmed that the two people he was with who raised the alarm are British.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response coordination center said overnight: “We received several 999 calls around 4:05pm yesterday afternoon reporting difficulties in getting a swimmer out of the water at Percheles Beach in Canada de Gallego, part of the municipality of Mazarron.

“According to the callers, two young English men reported that their companion had struck the rocks and was unconscious in the water."

"The Civil Guard, Mazarron Local Police, Mazarron Civil Protection, firefighters from the Murcia Region Fire and Rescue Consortium, and an ambulance from the 061 Emergency and Urgent Healthcare Service were immediately notified and dispatched to the scene.

“Shortly afterwards, the Civil Guard reported that several people had managed to remove the unconscious swimmer from the water. Following instructions from a nurse, those who had rescued him began CPR, which was continued by the Civil Guard and Mazarron Local Police, who had specialized resuscitation equipment, until the arrival of emergency health responders.

“A physician confirmed the death of the swimmer, a 25-year-old man.” The dead man’s body was screened off by Civil Protection workers before being taken away.

An autopsy is expected to be carried out later today. Locals commenting on the incident online have expressed their condolences. One said: “If there’s no lifeguard there’s no time for anything. Rest in peace. What a shame. Such a young man.”
