Huge London fire sends black smoke across skyline as 100 firefighters tackle blaze

A huge fire has erupted in London with 100 firefighters now battling the blaze.

Thick black smoke can be seen billowing out across the capital‘s skyline from a building on Landmann Way in Bermondsey, close to a major train line.

Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters have been called to a recycling centre that has caught on fire.

Pictures show firefighters at the scene surrounded by mountains of rubbish and using hoses to spray water on the inferno.

The blaze was first reported to the London Fire Brigade at around 5.30pm when crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich and surrounding fire stations rushed to the scene.

Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders have been deployed to be used as water towers to help extinguish the fire from above.

The LFB have told the public to “please avoid the area while the incident is ongoing”.

It added: “Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.”

The scale of the response has drawn significant attention from local residents, with emergency services expected to remain at the scene for several hours.

National Rail have announced some train cancellations and timetable revisions as a result of the fire being so close to the train line between London Bridge and Deptford station.

There are concerns that the dark, thick smoke blocks the train drivers’ vision of the tracks.
