Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during a friendly between Denmark and Ukraine in Odense, but regained consciousness and walked off the field.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championship in 2021, collapsing on the field in the match against Finland in Copenhagen.

The scary incident saw Eriksen stretchered off after receiving emergency treatment on the pitch.

Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator which enabled his career to continue, signing for Brentford in January 2022 after his contract at Inter Milan was terminated.

There has now been another terrifying moment for Eriksen on Sunday evening as the 34-year-old collapsed in the second half of the match against Ukraine.

Danish outlet TipsBladet described the situation in their live coverage, reporting: ‘Scary scenes in Odense. Christian Eriksen fell onto the grass and lay completely still. He is now receiving treatment.’

Players from both sides immediately rushed over to the fallen star, with medical staff and the player’s wife quickly onto the field.

Eriksen regained consciousness shortly afterward, and within a matter of minutes, he was back on his feet to great applause in the stadium.

The match was understandably paused and then abandoned, with both teams leaving the field.

A brief social media post from the Danish Football Association (DBU) read: ‘Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances.

‘The match has been called off.’

DBU doctor Morten Boesen said: ‘Christian is doing well and walked off the field himself. As I see it, the pacemaker is functioning as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but very quickly regained consciousness, and we were quickly in contact with him.

‘He will now undergo further examination at the hospital to determine what caused the incident. We are in constant contact with him and the doctors at the hospital. But Christian is doing well, and he asked me to convey his greetings to all the players and to say he was okay.

Denmark manager Brian Riemer added on TV2: ‘First of all, it’s a very shocking experience for everyone. The staff, the players, the opponents.

‘The most important thing was initially that we received a report about Christian. It was handled fantastically by doctor Morten Boesen, who was able to say that Christian is doing well, which is the only thing that matters in this situation.’

Eriksen left Manchester United last summer after three seasons at the club, signing for Wolfsburg on a free transfer.

He played 34 times last season in all competitions, scoring three goals.

In a friendly against DR Congo on Wednesday, he won his 150th cap for Denmark, becoming the first player to reach that milestone for the Danes.
