A man has been arrested after a woman was allegedly punched and raped in a horrific early morning attack.
The woman alerted police after the reported rape took place in Wellington, Somerset, at 2am on Friday.
It is alleged that a man punched the woman before raping her in the North Street area of the town and fleeing the scene in a car.
The woman was treated at the hospital and released, with specialist officers offering her support.
A man has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and remains in police custody.
Police took him in overnight on Friday in Sussex and have seized a car.
Following the incident, the police appealed for the public’s help in identifying a white Volkswagen Golf.
Investigators thanked the public for the information they provided as they worked to identify the suspect.
DI Wendy Fellowes said: “I’d like to thank members of the public who have been in touch offering CCTV and other footage of the suspect vehicle – a white Volkswagen Golf – and other information.
“Please do continue to review any footage you have of Waterloo Road, North Street, High Street, Fore Street or Taunton Road between 1am and 2.30am on Friday and contact us with any relevant information.”
