Former Labour MSP accused of drink-driving crash that nearly hit pedestrian

The former Labour MSP is facing allegations of narrowly avoiding hitting a pedestrian while driving under the influence in Edinburgh.

Colin Smyth is accused of three charges relating to an incident in the early hours of November 2 last year.

The 53-year-old former politician was scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Wednesday.

However, the case was postponed until next month for procedural reasons.

Prosecutors allege that around 2 a.m., Mr. Smyth drove dangerously, mounting the pavement on High Street in the center of Edinburgh.

The charges describe how he allegedly narrowly missed a person on the pavement, collided with a parked vehicle, and was speeding.

He is also accused of crashing into two electric bollards right outside Edinburgh City Chambers before revving his engine and repeatedly getting out of and into the car.

The charges also claim he failed to report the accident and that he was twice the legal alcohol limit at the time the crash occurred.

All the alleged offenses happened while Mr. Smyth was on bail from Dumfries Sheriff Court.
