Netflix has announced a huge shake-up to the way users can access their services, potentially leaving millions of people blocked from viewing their favourite films and TV shows.

The streaming giant is making changes to their password sharing rules and is now cracking down on people who share their password with others.

The company has already been testing out a new feature to prevent users sharing a password with family and friends and they've now confirmed it will be rolled out more widely.

The new measures mean millions of people who watch content for free will now be asked to pay.

However, Netflix added that there will be an option to add "paid sharing" which will cost less than a full subscription.

In the company's earning report, which was published earlier this week, Netflix said: "Later in Q1, we expect to start rolling out paid sharing more broadly.

"Today’s widespread account sharing (100M+ households) undermines our long term ability to invest in and improve Netflix, as well as build our business."

It has not yet been announced when the rules will come into force, or which areas will be affected.

Netflix will also be adding new features to its service, including being able to monitor what devices are using accounts.

"We've worked hard to build additional new features that improve the Netflix experience, including the ability for members to review which devices are using their account and to transfer a profile to a new account.

"As we roll out paid sharing, members in many countries will also have the option to pay extra if they want to share Netflix with people they don’t live with," the report continued.

They admitted the new rules may see negative engagement initially, but hope more people will end up signing up to the streaming site.

Netflix said: "We believe the pattern will be similar to what we’ve seen in Latin America, with engagement growing over time as we continue to deliver a great slate of programming and borrowers sign-up for their own accounts."

Netflix has also recently released an advert-supported plan which is cheaper for users.

A basic account with adverts costs just £4.99, £2 cheaper than the standard Basics plan.
