Meeting your partner's family for the first time is often a nerve-wracking experience, as even the most confident among us can crumble under pressure from time to time.

To make matters worse, people often misstep when they are most desperate to impress. It's one of life's cruelest tricks. One woman who would likely agree has been warned she might want to end her relationship, as people think she severely messed up an important introduction.

The unfortunate woman really put her foot in it when she met her partner's mum for the first time - as she trod dog poo through her house and insulted the parent's taste.

Now, she fears there's no coming back from her mortifying mistake.

Confessing her problem to Mumsnet, the woman revealed she made a series of mistakes. She explained: "First, I walked dog shit onto her carpet.

"Secondly - she was showing me around her bungalow and telling me she has only just moved in and it all needs decorating as the previous tenants had god awful taste. She used the hallway as an example. I agreed with her that it was awful, she then showed me her bathroom - I said it was even worse than the hallway. She'd just decorated the bathroom."

Her post continued: "Thirdly, I knocked a glass off the kitchen side (trying to be helpful and take the mugs away), she was NOT happy at all, apparently she'd had those glasses for years.

"Fourthly, I somehow damaged the flush on the toilet. I pressed it and it wouldn’t stop flushing." She added that her partner confided his mum did not like his ex-girlfriend 'either', suggesting she need not worry. But it doesn't sound like his words did much to calm her nerves, as she concluded: "Mortified and feel like calling time on the whole thing. I can never face her again."

In response, several commenters were quick to try and comfort the post's author.

One person wrote: "I did find that funny, although you must feel mortified. I'm sure everything will be okay, and you can all laugh about it in the future. Maybe next time take your shoes off when you go in to someone else's home." And a second added: "Oh well, it can only get better…"

But someone else said: "Maybe it is fate's way of letting you know he's not the right one." Meanwhile, one commenter joked: "Mate, cut your losses and break up with him now."
