A supporter has been charged after Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo reported racial abuse during the Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield in August.

Merseyside Police confirmed that Mark Mogan, 47, from Dovecot, has been charged with racially aggravated public order offences relating to the incident on 16 August, and is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on 22 December. He has been conditionally bailed.

The match was paused in the first half after Semenyo alerted officials to the abuse. The Ghana international later scored twice, helping Bournemouth level the game 2-2 before Liverpool eventually won 4-2. A man was arrested two days after the incident and issued with a nationwide stadium ban.

Semenyo later spoke publicly about the experience, thanking both clubs and fans for their support and calling for tougher punishments for racist behaviour in football, saying sanctions should go further — including lifetime bans or even jail time for offenders.
