Fatal single-vehicle collision shuts down M4, major delays expected

Another man was rushed to the hospital after suffering “serious injuries” following the crash on the M4 near Chippenham.

The incident has sparked travel chaos on the busy route, with drivers warned of major delays into this afternoon.

Police received reports of a “serious collision” at around 2am this morning.

Emergency crews were then scrambled to the scene, near Leigh Delamere services – between Junction 17 for Chippenham and Junction 18 for Bath.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and South West Ambulance Service were in attendance.

Wiltshire Police confirmed a 32-year-old man sadly died, while another remains in the hospital after suffering “serious injuries.”

The force said: “We are sad to report that a 32-year-old man has died following a road traffic collision involving a single vehicle on the M4.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and they are receiving support from specially trained officers. Our thoughts are with them.

Another man who was in the car is receiving hospital treatment for serious injuries.

The collision took place at about 2am this morning (30/11) on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 between Junction 17 and Junction 18.”

The Serious Collision Investigation Team has appealed for any witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam footage taken from the time.

National Highways confirmed a car was sent off the eastbound carriageway during the crash.

It said: “At around 02:00 Wiltshire Police responded to a serious single vehicle collision involving a car which has left the eastbound carriageway near Leigh Delamere services.

The carriageway has been closed to allow Wiltshire Police, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, and South West Ambulance Service to work at the scene of the collision.

Traffic Officers are on the scene and are assisting the emergency services response by providing traffic management at both the scene and J18.

Traffic Officers are also assisting those caught within the closure by turning traffic and releasing it via the rear of the queue.

Early indication suggests the closure will remain in place throughout this morning and into the afternoon.”

A diversion route is currently in place for commuters, who have been advised to follow the solid square symbol on road signs.
