Akon arrested after police found suspended license during Cybertruck stop

Hip-hop artist Akon was arrested last week in suburban Atlanta after he failed to appear in court for a ticket related to driving with a suspended license.

Police records indicate that Akon, whose legal name is Aliaune Thiam, was arrested on Friday by police in Chamblee, located just northeast of Atlanta. He was taken to the DeKalb County jail and then transferred to the Roswell police, who booked him into another jail. He later posted bail and was released the same day.

Akon, born in the United States to Senegalese parents, gained R&B fame following his 2004 debut album. The Grammy-nominated singer has been featured on over a dozen Top 10 hits, including “Smack That,” “I Wanna Love You,” and “Locked Up.” He has also engaged in philanthropic activities in Africa, having spent part of his childhood in Senegal.

Representatives for Akon did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wednesday.

Roswell police reports indicate that Akon, who lists an address in a gated community in nearby Alpharetta, was found on September 10 in a disabled Tesla Cybertruck on a busy street. The police officer called for a tow truck and, while waiting, discovered through a license plate check that Akon lacked valid auto insurance and had a suspended driver’s license due to failing to appear for a court hearing in January 2023.

The police impounded the vehicle and cited Akon for driving without a valid license, confiscating his license and releasing him. Additionally, police seized an “illegal vape,” according to the report.

Chamblee police informed local news outlets that they responded to a business called Tint World on Friday after a traffic camera alerted them to the presence of the Cybertruck linked to an outstanding warrant.

Akon is currently touring in India and performed in Delhi on Sunday, two days after his arrest.
