The BBC has been threatened with legal action by Donald Trump after the corporation admitted that the editing of a speech broadcast on Panorama misled viewers.
BBC chair Samir Shah apologized on Monday after two senior executives resigned on Sunday night - director-general Tim Davie and chief executive of BBC News Deborah Turness - amid concerns over impartiality at the corporation.
The dispute began when a memo by Michael Prescott, a former adviser to the BBC, was published on 3 November, stating that viewers were misled by an edition of Panorama broadcast a week before last year’s US election. The program edited Trump’s speech on 6 January, 2021, in a way that made it appear he told supporters he was going to walk to the Capitol with them to “fight like hell.”
In a letter published on Monday, Shah apologized, adding: “We accept that the way the speech was edited did give the impression of a direct call for violent action.”
BBC News has subsequently reported that Trump has sent a letter to the BBC threatening legal action. A BBC spokesperson told Yahoo News: “We will review the letter and respond directly in due course.”
