Metro train held at Tynemouth following passenger fall

A Tyne and Wear Metro train was held at Tynemouth station after a man fell and was taken to hospital as a result. Both the North East Ambulance Service and Northumbria Police attended the scene at around 8pm this evening.

The fall took place on board the train, with his fellow passengers alerting the driver, who in turn stopped the train at the North Tyneside station. The emergency services quickly made their way to the scene, but the man was back up and walking when they arrived.

He was taken to hospital on a precautionary basis to be checked over further, with the train continuing back into service after it had been stopped for around 20 minutes.

A Nexus spokesperson said: "It has been reported that a man fell while onboard a Metro train, and passengers quickly informed the driver who followed procedure and made the decision to stop at Tynemouth station.

"Northumbria Police officers were in the area and arrived within five minutes, and an ambulance came soon after, with the man back up and walking on the train when the emergency services arrived.

"As a precaution the man was taken to hospital to be checked over further by the North East Ambulance Service vehicle, and the train was stationary for a total of around 20 minutes before it resumed service."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 7.50pm today (25 OCT) for a passenger on board a Metro train who had fallen ill. An ambulance crew attended to the patient at Tynemouth Metro station and took a man to hospital."

In the aftermath of the incident, the Tyne and Wear Metro account on X posted the following: "We are still experiencing delays of 25 minutes or more on the Yellow line due to the earlier medical emergency.

"We are working to return trains to timetable as quickly as possible. Thank you for your continued patience."
