Lucy Powell appointed as Labour’s new deputy leader

Lucy Powell has been appointed as the new deputy leader of the Labour Party, defeating Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson in the party ballot, officials confirmed on Thursday. The results were announced at an event in central London this morning.

Powell, the MP for Manchester Central, thanked party members for their support in her victory speech, calling for a “renewal of political culture” and a “reconnection between government and the people.” During the campaign, she frequently acknowledged the government’s “mistakes” on key policy issues, including the decision to scrap the winter fuel allowance.

Prime Minister and Labour leader Keir Starmer congratulated Powell on her win, describing her as “a dedicated team player who has consistently stood up for working people.”

Political analysts said Powell’s election signals an appetite within the Labour Party for more open internal debate after criticism of an overly “command and control” style of governance.
