Over 6,500 of the most serious offenders, including killers, rapists, and pedophiles, will qualify for early release from prison under Labour’s sentencing plans, according to the Tories.

An analysis by the party claims that the criminals will be entitled to release as part of plans to address overcrowding, freeing up around 10,000 spaces.

Under the Labour plans, serious sexual and violent offenders could be released halfway through their sentences rather than two-thirds if they participate in rehabilitative programs and adhere to prison rules.

The initiative, outlined in the sentencing bill currently before Parliament, will apply to thousands of prisoners who have been sentenced to "determinate" or "fixed-term" sentences of four years or more.

The Tories’ analysis suggests more than 6,500 of the most serious offenders, including stalkers, violent attackers, and those attempting murder, will qualify for early release under the changes.

The party estimated they accounted for 85 percent of all criminals on "determinate" sentences.

They calculated that 2,100 rapists, stalkers, child groomers, and pedophiles would have their prison time reduced.

They estimated eligibility would cover 62 percent—or 624—of rapists and 83 percent of child sex offenders jailed for rape, grooming, and possession of indecent images.

Kieran Mullan, the shadow justice minister, said: “Labour’s early release plan is a betrayal of victims and a gift to rapists and pedophiles. Keir Starmer is putting criminals before communities and letting predators out early.”

“Under Labour’s plans, thousands of the most serious [offences] would no longer be treated as such, an insult to thousands of victims across the country. Anyone who votes for these plans will have to explain exactly why these crimes do not count among the most serious offences.”

“The Conservatives will fight this moral decay every step of the way, and our fully-funded plan to put an extra 10,000 police officers on the streets will help to restore public order.”

The Tories are tabling an amendment to the sentencing bill that would exclude the most serious crimes, including rape, assault by penetration, grievous bodily harm, stalking, and all sexual offences against children, so they would not be eligible for early release.

The party is proposing legal changes to require courts to collect and publish detailed data on sentencing to “shine a light” on who is punished and for what crimes.

It also plans to make judges’ sentencing comments publicly available within two days so victims can understand why offenders were dealt with in that manner.

Parents convicted of child sexual offences would be automatically prevented from having parental rights under the Tory proposals.

The party would also extend the 28-day time limit victims and families have to challenge lenient sentences and expand whole-life orders for the murder of police or prison officers.
