Two girls die in New York subway surfing tragedy

Two girls were discovered dead on a New York City train in the early hours of Saturday morning in a "subway surfing" stunt that went tragically wrong, officials confirmed.

New York City police rushed to a 999 call at the Marcy Avenue stop in Brooklyn just after 3am where they discovered two unresponsive girls who were declared dead at the scene.

Police have yet to identify the victims or disclose their ages, saying an investigation is underway.

"It’s heartbreaking that two young girls are gone because they somehow thought riding outside a subway train was an acceptable game," New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow said in a statement.

"Parents, teachers, and friends need to be clear with loved ones: getting on top of a subway car isn’t "surfing"-it’s suicide," reports the Express US.

He added that the grieving families and the transit workers who discovered the girls are "horribly shaken by this tragedy."

Six people lost their lives surfing subway trains in the city last year, rising from five in 2023. In recent years, numerous teenagers, predominantly lads, have perished due to subway surfing, which stretches back a century but has gained popularity through social media, AP reported.

Social media firms have been urged by the transit authority to delete all online videos that glorify subway surfing. Officials have tried to boost public awareness through campaigns, and by deploying drones to catch surfers.

The NYPD also revealed that the number of arrests made due to subway surfing rocketed to 229 last year, up from 135 the previous year. The majority of these daredevils were teenage lads, with the youngest being just 9 years old.
