The sentencing hearing for music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs has officially begun in a packed federal courtroom in Brooklyn. Combs, who has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center since his September 2024 arrest, was escorted by deputy U.S. marshals into the courtroom Friday morning.
The judge granted Combs permission to appear in non-prison attire throughout his trial and sentencing. He entered the courtroom wearing a light-colored sweater over a button-down shirt and dress pants, greeting his family, lawyers, and supporters with hugs before taking his seat at the defense table.
During the hearing, defense attorney Nicole Westmoreland became emotional while highlighting Combs’ significance to the Black community through his ventures in music, fashion, television, and business. She credited him with breaking barriers as a young Black entrepreneur who founded his own record label at a time when such a move was dismissed as unrealistic.
“Mr. Combs starting his own record label as a Black, young male back then was almost kind of jokeable. But he had the audacity to do it anyway,” Westmoreland said, stressing how his success inspired countless individuals.
She added that Combs’ career sent a powerful message: “You don’t just have to be signed to a label, you can be the label.”
The sentencing hearing is expected to continue with further statements from both defense and prosecution before the judge delivers a final ruling.
