A triple murder investigation is underway after a mother, father, and their son were stabbed to death at their family home.
The horrifying discovery was made when a friend visited the home in Drumgowna, near Tallanstown in Co Louth, this morning.
The victims were locally identified as Mark and Louise O’Connor, originally from Dundalk, along with their son Evan.
Two of the family members were found outside the property, while a third was found inside the home.
One theory is that the two relatives found outside had fled the home after being attacked and collapsed.
Following the discovery, both armed Gardaí and uniformed officers responded to the emergency call.

One source said: “This is yet another terrible tragedy that has unfolded in rural Ireland. The frontline officers were met with a horrific scene and three family members have lost their lives.
“It’s impossible to know at this stage the motive as to why this has happened.”
The family were extremely well-known and popular in the area.
The couple were keen runners, with dad Mark recently competing in the Boston marathon.
A report in a local newspaper in April told how Mark, 54, completed the course in an impressive time of two hours and 58 minutes, just under his target of three hours.
It added that Mark took up running in his 40s and is a member of the North East Runners.
’Kind women’
One woman told how she was only chatting to nurse Louise a few days ago and she was “in the best of form”.
She added: “I cannot believe she is now dead.
“She was a wonderful, kind woman and did not deserve this. I just hope that she didn’t suffer.”
It’s also understood the arrested man was seen out hitchhiking on the local roads.

One eyewitness who saw him said he was dressed in tradesman’s trousers.
The man said the suspect sat on a wall near the family home for half an hour or so before he began walking towards another village, Tallanstown, about six kilometres from the murder scene.
Gardai immediately sent officers from the Armed Support Unit into the area and local people were warned to stay indoors.
The eyewitness said he saw a swarm of cop cars heading on the same route the suspect took into Tallanstown, and arrested him immediately.
Officers conducted house-to-house inquiries today in the local area. They have urged anyone who may have been in the area or any drivers with dash cam footage to come forward.
Gardai are also still searching for the suspected murder weapon.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed an arrest had been made.
The suspect was being held at a Garda station in the North West region last night.
No threat to public
They also confirmed the house where the incident happened is being preserved for a technical examination.
Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan said there was no further threat to the public following the “criminal act”.
He added: “What I can say and what Gardai have said is that they are not looking for anyone else in respect of this criminal act.
“There is no ongoing threat to the public in Co Louth.”
’Special place’
Local people praised Mark and Louise and said they were great parents who adored their three sons.
Another resident said: “They adored their whole family and Evan had a special place in their hearts.”
North Louth Sinn Fein TD Ruairi O Murchu expressed his shock at the news of the three deaths.
He said: “The whole community is utterly shocked.
’Shocking and appalling’
“My first thoughts and those of everyone else are with the loved ones of the family who have been violently killed in their home.
“This is a truly shocking and appalling incident which has absolutely stunned the whole community all over Co Louth.
"The fact that three members of one family seem to have died in dreadful and violent circumstances on a Monday morning in a quiet and rural area of mid-Louth is appalling.
“I would appeal to anyone with information to go to the Gardai immediately and ask that people not speculate on this incident online.”
’Terrible tragedy’
Local Fianna Fail councillor John Sheridan offered his condolences to the family, adding: “This is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.
“I remember being in the house when I was canvassing and they were a lovely family who were involved in the community.”
Local Fine Gael councillor Rachel Kerley said the community is in “complete shock”.
She added: “It’s important that we all stick together and that people who need help can reach out to the relevant support systems.”
Ambulances rushed to the murder house but it was too late and all three victims were dead.
As part of the investigation, Gardai are trying to establish a motive for the murders.
Local Fine Gael councillor Rachel Kerley said the community is in “complete shock”.
She added: “It’s important that we all stick together and that people who need help can reach out to the relevant support systems.”
