A Turlock woman is facing charges of murder and other crimes after police officers discovered her 2-year-old daughter unresponsive in a home swimming pool on Friday afternoon.
Officers immediately began CPR, according to a news release on Saturday from the Turlock Police Department. However, despite lifesaving efforts by officers, fire personnel, and medical staff, Danielle Pires was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The 911 call reporting a child found unresponsive in a swimming pool was received shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The incident occurred on the 4500 block of Fireside Drive.
Investigating detectives concluded that the child’s mother, 40-year-old Kelle Brassart, was responsible for the child’s care at the time of the incident, according to the news release. “Detectives also discovered evidence suggesting that alcohol and/or drugs might have been contributing factors,” it states. “Additionally, Brassart has multiple prior contacts and referrals with Child Protective Services in other counties.”
Brassart was the one who called 911 and was the sole adult present with her daughter at the time of the incident, Police Department spokeswoman Dominique Sanchez told The Bee. She appeared to be under the influence, Sanchez said, and informed officers that due to her use of a wheelchair, she was unable to get her daughter out of the pool.
There is fencing around the in-ground pool, Sanchez said, but “there was a hole in it that a child could easily fit through.”
Brassart was arrested and booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of murder and child neglect resulting in death.
“This is incredibly tragic,” said Chief Jason Hedden in the news release. “Our hearts go out to the family, friends, and first responders who were impacted by this devastating loss.”
