Putin repeats lies on Ukraine war at SCO summit in China

War criminal Vladimir Putin is currently visiting China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. On the sidelines of the event, the dictator once again spread lies about Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Speaking at the SCO Council of Heads of State, Putin repeated his usual narrative, claiming that so-called “root causes of the Ukrainian crisis” must be addressed to achieve lasting peace.

What did Putin say about the war in Ukraine?

The Kremlin leader cynically insisted that the “crisis” in Ukraine was not the result of Russia’s invasion, but rather the outcome of a Western-backed coup in Kyiv. He further alleged that NATO’s efforts to bring Ukraine into the alliance were among the main reasons for the conflict.

Putin falsely claimed that Russia’s approach is based on the idea that no country can guarantee its security at the expense of another.

He also referenced the summit in Alaska, portraying it as a moment of recognition by the United States. Putin expressed hope that the “understanding” allegedly reached there could pave the way toward peace in Ukraine.

Recent Kremlin statements on the war

  • On August 31, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov accused Ukraine and Europe of rejecting peace, claiming that European allies encourage Kyiv to prolong the war and pursue maximalist demands. According to him, Russia’s so-called “special military operation” will continue until Ukraine and its partners accept Moscow’s terms.
  • Despite public remarks about Putin’s supposed readiness to meet President Zelenskyy, Moscow has dismissed the idea in practice. Peskov argued that talks between leaders would only make sense to finalize a peace deal.
  • Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova insisted that any agreement must include “demilitarization,” “denazification,” and neutrality for Ukraine. She added that Russia demands protections for Russian-speaking populations and “canonical Orthodoxy” within Ukraine.
  • Media reports suggest that in a conversation with Donald Trump, Putin dropped his demand for control over four Ukrainian regions, instead insisting only that Ukrainian forces withdraw from Donbas.
