A couple have been tragically killed after a car crashed into them outside a wine cellar in the popular Canary Islands.

Emergency services were called to reports of the fatal crash at around 7pm on Sunday outside rural winery La Tienda del Vino in La Gomera.

Police said the two individuals were sitting on a bench chatting when a car veered off the road and devastatingly collided with them.

A man, said to be the owner of the winery, and a 59-year-old woman were killed instantly as there was "nothing they could have done to get out of the way," police added.

The pair were sitting outside La Tienda del Vino, a winery visited by thousands of Brits every year and considered a must-see for holidaygoers.

SUC air resources were deployed as the GH-1 highway was forced to close for several hours.

The driver - a La Gomera local - was rushed to the hospital where he is being treated for a serious hip injury.

Meanwhile, a female passenger was airlifted to a hospital in Tenerife.

Other residents in the area, who have reported suffering from anxiety attacks, are being supported by paramedics.

Valle de Gran Rey officials announced three days of mourning.

The area’s mayor, Borja Barroso, said: "We are very sad, shocked and deeply affected; these are very complex times, because it is something that logically one does not expect to ever happen."

La Gomera has become a popular tourist hotspot in the last few years thanks to the island’s breathtaking scenery.

According to the local tourism board, San Sebastian de la Gomera was where Christopher Columbus restocked his supplies before setting sail on his first voyage to the Americas in the 15th Century.

The island’s affordability is a significant draw for tourists. Due to their popularity, Tenerife and Gran Canaria can be more expensive, but La Gomera is still reasonably priced — even during summer.

Since accommodations and eating out are less expensive, they are appealing options for budget-conscious Brits who don’t want to sacrifice quality.

This incident comes just weeks after footballer Zaben Ramos was killed in a horrific car crash on Gran Canaria.

He remained in a coma for 15 days while medical professionals battled to save his life.

However, Las Palmas announced the left-back later passed away as a result of his injuries.
