At least six students drown, 21 hospitalized during school trip swim in Egypt
At least six students have reportedly drowned and 21 were taken to the hospital after experiencing difficulties while swimming on a school trip in Egypt.
Emergency services were called to Abu Talat Beach in Alexandria to rescue the group.
Six students were pronounced dead at the scene, while 21 were taken to the hospital and another three were treated on the beach.
Red warning flags had already been raised due to dangerous wave conditions and strong currents.
The beach has now been closed and Egypt’s Ministry of Health said they ‘urge the public to adhere to safety guidelines on beaches’.
Khaled Abdel Ghaffa, Minister of Health and Population, said that all emergency treatment is being made available to the students.
An investigation has opened to determine if proper safety measures were in place.
