Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa dies from injuries sustained in Tokyo tournament
Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa has died from injuries he suffered a week ago during a tournament in Tokyo.
On August 2, the 28-year-old Urakawa lost by knockout to Eiji Saito in the eighth round.
“The WBO mourns the death of Japanese boxer Hiromasa Urakawa, who passed away from injuries sustained during a fight. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and the Japanese boxing community during this incredibly difficult time,” the organization wrote on social media.
Just a day earlier, boxer Shigetoshi Kotari also died from injuries. He fought on the same tournament card as Urakawa. Kotari’s bout lasted 12 rounds and ended in a draw. After the match, he collapsed in the locker room. His opponent, Yamato Hata, was hospitalized after the fight and remains in a coma.
