World-renowned athlete Felix Baumgartner, who jumped from the stratosphere in 2012, died during a paragliding flight.

He died on July 17 as a result of an accident on the Adriatic coast, according to the Austrian outlet Kurier.

He died instantly.

At the time of his death, Baumgartner was 56 years old.

What Felix Baumgartner is known for

The Austrian athlete gained fame for performing jumps from extreme heights — including skyscrapers, helicopters, and even hot air balloons.

In 1999, he jumped from the world’s tallest bridge — the Millau Viaduct in France. He also completed a jump from the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

His most famous achievement was the stratospheric jump on October 14, 2012.

As part of the Red Bull Stratos project, Baumgartner ascended in a capsule to an altitude of nearly 39 kilometers and jumped in free fall.

During that “flight,” he reached a speed of 1,350 km/h, becoming the first person in history to break the sound barrier without using any form of engine-powered technology.
