A body has been found in the search for a missing soldier who has been reported missing since Sunday.

Alex Cairnie, 30, of the Queen’s Royal Hussars, was last seen walking around a Tesco near to his military base in Tidworth, Wiltshire, at around 11am on Sunday.

At 6pm this evening a body was found near Warren Hill.

While formal identification has yet to take place, it is believed to be Alex and his next of kin have been informed.

Police said there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

One friend posted on Facebook: ‘I really wish I knew what you were going through, I would’ve done everything in my power to help you through it mate.

‘I can’t even imagine what pain your family must be in now they’ve lost you, I know it hurts me so it must be devastating.’

DI Mark Kent said: ‘Our thoughts are very much with the family and loved ones of Alex at this extremely difficult time.

‘I would like to thank all those involved in the search efforts to locate him.’

Alex was a sergeant in the Queen’s Royal Hussars regiment and hundreds of military personnel and volunteers searched for him while he was missing.
