A 14-year-old girl was killed and around 70 people were injured after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck Marmaris, Turkey. The epicenter was just 10 km from the resort.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya stated that the girl died as a result of a panic attack, while others were injured when jumping from windows or seeking shelter. No structural damage has been reported.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located 10.43 kilometers from Marmaris at a depth of 67.91 kilometers. The tremors caused panic not only in Turkey but also in neighboring Greece.
According to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake began in the Mediterranean Sea at 2:17 a.m.
It was so powerful that people on the Greek island of Rhodes were awakened by the shaking.
Video footage shows people rushing out of restaurants and hotels into the streets.
According to the state-run Anatolu news agency, Turkey’s Muğla province — home to popular coastal resorts such as Marmaris, Bodrum, and Fethiye — hosted 3.7 million foreign tourists in 2024.
The earthquake was also felt on the Dodecanese islands in Greece. However, no injuries were reported there.
According to the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, the tremors were also felt in Egypt.
