Mexican blogger shot dead while livestreaming on TikTok
Mexican beauty influencer Valeria Márquez shot dead during livestream — case investigated as femicide
In Mexico, 23-year-old beauty and makeup influencer Valeria Márquez was shot dead on May 13 while working at a beauty salon. Authorities have confirmed the case is being investigated as femicide — the killing of a woman because of her gender.
According to reports, a man suddenly entered the salon and fatally shot her. At the time, Márquez was livestreaming on TikTok, seated at a table and holding a stuffed animal.
During the stream, she could be heard saying, “They’re coming.” A male voice then asked off camera, “Hey, Vale?” to which she replied, “Yes,” before muting the audio. Moments later, she was shot.
The livestream briefly showed a man’s face after he picked up her phone, before abruptly ending.
Márquez had a following of nearly 200,000 on Instagram and TikTok. In an earlier stream, she shared that someone had visited the salon while she was away and tried to leave her an expensive gift. Visibly uneasy, she said she wasn’t planning to wait around for the person to return.
Prosecutors confirmed they are treating her death as femicide, a legal classification used for gender-based killings of women and girls.
According to the United Nations, Mexico ranks fourth in Latin America and the Caribbean for femicide, alongside Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. In 2023, the country recorded 1.3 femicides per 100,000 women.
