North Korea begins weapons system tests on new multi-role destroyer
North Korea has carried out weapons tests on its new multi-role destroyer Choe Hyon, which was launched last week. The tests were reported by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).
According to the report, the warship’s cutting-edge armament system includes a range of powerful missile technologies—specifically, supersonic and strategic cruise missiles, as well as tactical ballistic missiles.
The initial tests took place on April 28 and 29. They included trial launches of supersonic cruise missiles, strategic cruise missiles, and surface-to-air missiles, along with live fire from a 127-mm automatic deck gun. Additional testing involved anti-ship tactical guided weapons, automatic deck cannons, smoke guns, and electronic warfare jamming guns.
According to the agency, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the tests and emphasized the need to "accelerate the navy’s nuclear armament to defend the nation and maritime sovereignty against existing and potential threats."
“It is time to take the responsible step of accelerating the nuclear armament of the naval forces to protect the state and maritime sovereignty from current and future threats,” Kim Jong Un declared.
