UK military shrinking by 300 a month, says Radakin

The British Armed Forces are currently shrinking by between 200 and 300 personnel each month, according to Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, the Chief of the Defence Staff. He warned that it could take up to three years to reverse this decline and start growing the size of the military again.

As of January 2025, the total strength of the UK Armed Forces stood at 180,780 personnel, of which 127,040 were fully trained. Despite a 20% increase in recruitment last year — with 12,850 new recruits joining — the forces still saw 14,830 personnel leave, resulting in a net decrease.

Radakin emphasized that improving retention is just as critical as recruitment. He highlighted broader issues such as housing, pay, career development, and overall conditions of service as key areas that need urgent attention if the forces are to maintain and rebuild their strength.

In a speech addressing defense challenges, Radakin also acknowledged the geopolitical context, stressing that strengthening the military is essential amid increasing global instability and threats from nations like Russia and China.

Efforts to tackle the personnel shortfall include targeted recruitment campaigns, improvements to military accommodation, and proposals to make service life more attractive to families. However, defense analysts caution that rebuilding numbers will require sustained investment and political commitment.
