McGregor declares ‘they will have to kill me’ in latest political outburst
The MMA star continues to wage a war of words with the Irish government.
Conor McGregor has proclaimed ‘they will have to kill me’ in his latest bizarre social media post.
Taking to Facebook, McGregor mentioned revolutionaries Michael Collins, Harry Boland and Arthur Griffith, stating that “Without the murder of these 3 men in betrayal, we would not be in this situation, with the power fully removed from the people.”
McGregor’s full post reads: “They will have to kill me to stop me.
“The foundation of bunreacht na hEireann was done on the blood of Harry Boland, Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins!
“Without the murder of these 3 men in betrayal, we would not be in this situation, with the power fully removed from the people.
“Our government, since the dawn of its time, was born on the betrayal of its great citizens.
“The constitution will be fixed!
"Power torn from the grasp of the political elite!
“The truth shall prevail,
“IRELAND WILL BE FREE”
The MMA star’s post is the latest in a long line of social media offerings that have criticised the Irish government as his war of words with the government continues.
McGregor used his St Patrick’s Day visit to the White House as a platform to launch into an anti-immigration rant, stating that Ireland was on “on the cusp of losing its Irishness,” and that an “Illegal immigration racket” was “running ravage on the country.”
The former UFC champions comments have been widely condemned by senior political figures in government, with Taoiseach Micheal Martin saying: “As far as the government is concerned – it’s an elected government, by the way – and we’re very focused on increasing the policing in the public order capacity.
“But I don’t take too much note of his criticism other than to say that he does not speak for for the Irish people in any shape or form.
“And we will continue to work in Dail Eireann and in engaging with the opposition in Dail Eireann who are elected also. And we will engage in terms of the best policies to develop for this country into the future.”
As McGregor continues to dip his toes into political discourse, the former UFC lightweight champion, who hasn’t fought since 2021 and has one just one bout since 2016, has used social media as a tool to tease a potential run for the presidency of Ireland when Michael D Higgins’ second term ends later this year.
Despite showing an apparent lack of a grasp as to what powers the President actually has, McGregor has been using social media to tout his plans if he is elected to Áras on Uachtaráin, ending many of his posts with the slogan “Vote McGregor.”
The 36-year-old has claimed that he will run for Áras an Uachtaráin in this year’s election, but has not made it clear how he plans on getting nominated.
To run for the presidency, he would need to either be nominated by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas (TDs or Senators) or by at least four local authorities (county or city councils), both of which look highly unlikely to happen at this time.
