Manchester Police have arrested six men aged between 18 to 24 on suspicion of affray. They remain in police custody for questioning following a mass brawl with knives

Six people armed with suspected knives and hammers have been arrested after a mass brawl in Manchester.

Police were called to reports of men fighting on Wilmslow Road in south Manchester. The altercation included the use of multiple weapons and happened shortly before 2am. The suspects, aged between 18 to 24, were arrested on suspicion of affray following the brawl.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed several people were left with "serious" injuries. In a statement, the force said: "It’s believed that a group of men were fighting with weapons, believed to be knives and hammers, and several were injured.

"Their injuries are serious, but they are thankfully not believed to be life-changing or life-threatening. Six men aged 18 to 24 have been arrested on suspicion of affray. They remain in police custody for questioning." Denison Road in Rusholme is one of the scenes cordoned off as detectives work following the incident, reports Manchester Evening News.

Pictures appear to show a car with significant damage to its windscreen inside the cordon. Witnesses reported seeing a "heavy police presence" in the area. Detective Inspector Mark Astbury from our City of Manchester Criminal Investigation Department said: “Whilst we do believe this to be a targeted attack, we do not underestimate the impact this will have on the local community.

“This incident happened in a busy area, showing an unacceptable disregard for the safety of the community. Fortunately, no further injuries have been reported to us, and we were able to arrest those who we believe to be involved immediately. Additional officers remain in the area whilst we conduct further enquiries, and I ask that if anyone has any concerns or questions, please speak to them.”
