Oil tanker erupts in flames after collision off Yorkshire coast
An Oil tanker containing a shipment of jet fuel has burst into flames after colliding with a cargo vessel off the coast of Yorkshire.
The incident occurred in the Humber Estuary near the town of Withernsea, east of Hull shortly before 10am this morning.
A coastguard helicopter has been dispatched to scene and is currently co-ordinating a response with local firefighters.
An HM Coastguard spokesperson said: ‘HM Coastguard is currently co-ordinating the emergency response to reports of a collision between a tanker and cargo vessel off the coast of East Yorkshire.
‘The alarm was raised at 9.48am.
‘A Coastguard rescue helicopter from Humberside was called, alongside lifeboats from Skegness, Bridlington, Maplethorpe and Cleethorpes, an HM Coastguard fixed wing aircraft, and nearby vessels with fire-fighting capability.
‘The incident remains ongoing.’
Members of the US-flagged tanker Stena Immaculate have abandoned the container ship off the coast of the Humber Estuary. There are no reported injuries at this time.
