Jamie Carragher lets rip at "liability" Hugo Lloris after Tottenham howler

Jamie Carragher savagely tore into Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris for becoming a “liability” to his side after their collapse against Manchester City.

The North London side raced into a surprise 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday evening with goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal. The hosts roared back after the break as Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland levelled matters before Riyad Mahrez took matters into his own hands with a second-half brace.

Lloris did not cover himself in glory for the two of the goals having failed to collect as Alvarez found a foothold, whilst he was beaten far too easily at his near post by Mahrez. Man Utd icon Gary Neville criticised the Frenchman for his attempts to halt the Algerian’s goalbound effort.

Speaking on commentary, he said: “The goalkeeper, I have to say, is in a poor run of form. He has to save that.”

“He hits that well, Mahrez, but that cannot go past him at the near post. Despite the deflection, he has to stop that going in.”

Lloris’ disappointing performance followed a disastrous outing in the recent North London Derby defeat to Arsenal last time out. Carragher has claimed that despite the quality that the French World Cup winner has displayed in the past, he will only continue to cost Spurs points going forwards.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle at the Etihad Stadium, he said: “The goalkeeper for Tottenham right now has been a good goalkeeper for Tottenham. He’s now become a liability and they need to change it.

“They need a new goalkeeper for next season. When Antonio Conte’s talking about taking them further or maybe getting top four or challenging for big honours, they need a new goalkeeper.

“They need two centre-backs, they need a right-wing back. That’s not to come into the squad, that’s to play. That’s exactly what they need right now.

“That’s what I go back to; Conte hasn’t got the players that he wants to play his way which is defensive football, which is counter-attacking football. He’s got the attacking players but he hasn’t got the defenders to get him clean sheets.”

Tottenham could well make a decision over their goalkeeping department going forwards. Lloris, now 36, has just 18 months remaining on his current deal in North London with the club already looking for his long-term successor.

Everton ’s Jordan Pickford has reportedly been sounded out as a potential recruit, whilst Brentford star David Raya is also apparently on the club’s shortlist. A deal for the Spaniard might prove slightly difficult though with it being suggested that Premier League rivals Manchester United and Chelsea are both interested as they too look for long-term additions in goal.
