Man shot by armed police after ’altercation’ between two people in Surrey

A man was shot by police in Surrey in the early hours of this morning.

Officers had been called to Nursery Road, Knaphill following reports of a man armed with a weapon in the street during an altercation between two people.

Armed police then shot the man, aged in his 20s, when they arrived at the address in the village near Woking.

The man remains in critical but stable condition in hospital.

An unspecified weapon was found at the scene, according to police.

Surrey Police has now referred itself to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a result of the shooting.

The force said it is unable to comment on the investigation into the shooting after the mandatory referral.

However, they said there is believed to be no threat posed to the wider public as a result of the altercation overnight.

Both parties are said to have been known to each other.

In as statement, the police said: ‘Nursery Road is partially closed with limited foot and vehicle access to residents.

‘Please avoid the area where possible for the time being.

‘We appreciate the localised disruption this will cause and would like to thank the community for their cooperation and patience while our enquiries are underway.’
