Love Island voiceover star Iain Stirling has commented on the replacement of his wife Laura Whitmore with fresh host Maya Jama for the winter series of the ITV2 show.

Love Island returned to screens with a second series of the winter instalment of the reality dating show, as a new batch of singletons jetted to South Africa looking for love.

The comedian, who has been the commentator on the show since it first launched in 2015, has now commented on the presenter shake-up after Laura announced she would step back from hosting duties at the end of last year.

After the show hit screens again on Monday evening, Iain appeared on Good Morning Britain on Wednesday morning to speak with hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls.

The co-hosts asked Iain for his thoughts on Maya’s sensational debut in the South African villa, which saw her stun in three different outfits, most notably a daring black cut-out dress.

Susanna said: “It must be weird for you. Laura hosted it for many years brilliantly. Maya is now the host of Love Island. She’s looking just as fabulous. Are you able to judge?”

Iain insisted he would never ‘judge’ the pair, adding: “I can’t say I'm going to judge anybody!”

Susanna then insisted that was one of the key elements of the show, which Iain was forced to concede.

Ed then cut in to ask: “So you’ve not said to her, can you come over for a chat? Or I'm sending you a text or anything like that?”

Slightly nonplussed, Iain replied: “To Maya Jama? I’m sure my wife would have something to say if that happened.”

He then added: “I think Maya’s absolutely fantastic. Laura was absolutely fantastic. Maya is doing such a good job. Her slow motion walks have been something else. Great looks.”

Iain went on to explain how he does his nightly commentary for the show, explaining producers no longer need him to fly to the location of the show as he did in previous years.

He said: “I used to go every year and when Covid happened, I had done one of the series from home and then it just became very apparent that, although it’s nice being out there, it isn’t necessary.

Iain continued: “I used to be in a cabin in Spain, I’m now in a man cave playing FIFA and watching Love Island.

“It's ideal. I can nip down in between parts and get a cup of tea and check on everyone.”
