Meghan Markle's first maid of honour reveals why she ended friendship with 'calculated' star

One of Meghan Markle's childhood best friends has revealed why she ended her once close relationship with the Duchess of Sussex, describing her as 'calculated' and 'strategic'.

Meghan's once best friend Ninaki Priddy was her original Maid of Honour at her first wedding in 2011 when Meghan wed first husband Trevor Engelson. The couple were married for just three years until they split in 2014, with Meghan later marrying Prince Harry in 2018.

With a friendship spanning 31 years with the two women knowing each other and being close since age 2, Priddy has revealed how once Meghan began to become more well known with her role as Rachel Zane in Suits, she quickly distanced herself from her original friendship circle.

Another nail in the coffin according to Priddy was her disapproval of Meghan's split from husband Trevor, as she tried to speak to the Duchess but found she shut her down and refused to acknowledge Trevor's hurt from the 'out of the blue' breakup. Speaking to The Daily Mail in 2017, Priddy commented: "The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him."

Priddy explained how the duo then began to chat to one another less and less, and after her chat with Trevor about the divorce, Priddy tried to talk to Meghan but she 'wouldn’t confide in me' and she found the actress had a new friendship circle, effectively shutting Priddy out. She added: "All I can say now is that I think Meghan was calculated - very calculated - in the way she handled people and relationships." Priddy also explained that she sees the Duchess as "very strategic" describing her as 'cultivating' her friendship circle and that she 'shuts down' friends she is done with, leaving no chance to negotiate.

Describing the end of their friendship "like a death", Priddy revealed she has "mourned" her once close relationship with the Suits star, as she explained: "Even now I’ll pass by a magazine stand and see a face staring out at me that was such a big part of my life."

Meghan Markle is reported to be focusing heavily on building the Sussex brand for her and Prince Harry over in the US, continuing their work since leaving the royal family in 2020 as working royals. The couple are still in limbo over whether their $20m Netflix deal will be renewed when the contract ends next year, and they are ploughing on with other endeavours including relaunching Meghan's Archetypes podcast.

The Duchess of Sussex has revealed she is "thrilled" to announce the series has been released on all platforms following her dramatic split from her Spotify agreement. It's described again as a "podcast where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back," and all 13 episodes will once again be available now she has relaunched with Lemonada.

It comes a month after she revealed she had signed a new deal with Lemonada following the cancellation of her and Harry's lucrative $20million with streaming giants Spotify. In a statement last month, Meghan said: "I'm proud to now be able to share that I am joining the brilliant team at Lemonada to continue my love of podcasting."
