There's nothing more frustrating than finishing a deep clean and noticing your taps are still victim to some stubborn limescale marks.

Now a cleaning professional has shared a simple hack that will help to banish the limescale and it will also leave your house smelling amazing. The "magic" ingredient is a natural cleaning staple and will cost just 23p to use. Limescale is caused by hard water residue on taps, and it can be a pain to try and remove, but luckily James Elston from Boiler Central, known for his knowledge of home maintenance and heating has come to the rescue.

So to banish the limescale for good, the pro recommended using lemons. He told The US Sun: "Using a cut lemon on taps is an excellent method for not only removing them but also infusing a delightful freshness to your kitchen." Not only does it smell great, it's chemical-free and you're also saving money by not needing to fork out on pricey home cleaning products.

He further detailed the breakdown of the cleaning routine and said: "Start by cutting a fresh lemon in half. Take one of the halves and rub the exposed flesh directly onto the surface. Make sure you cover the areas with hard water stains thoroughly. Allow the natural acidity of the lemon to work its magic. The citric acid interacts with the minerals present in hard water stains, making them more manageable to wipe away."

If you are struggling with stubborn limescale that is proving hard to remove, the expert gave insight into more of a deep clean with the lemons. He added: "For stubborn stains, you can leave the lemon juice on the affected area for a few minutes before wiping. This allows the citric acid to penetrate deeper, facilitating the removal of more persistent deposits."

The science behind using lemons is that they are a "natural source" of citric acid, which James described as a "mild cleaning agent". The acidity "reacts" with the minerals in the hard water stains and breaks them down to make the cleaning process "smoother".

So this eco-friendly and sustainable cleaning method will help keep taps sparkling and reducing limescale build-up will help contribute to the "overall efficiency" of your hot water system James added.

You can buy a pack of three lemons from Asda for 69p which makes it 23p per lemon.
