The witch doctors scamming Brits with terminal cancer and promising £3,000 cure
Sick patients are being targeted by "healers" claiming cancer is a result of black magic which can only be undone by spells - costing as much as £3,000.
People with terminal cancer are among those targeted by the self-proclaimed healers, who often use social media sites like Facebook and Instagram to reach out. Some have, however, been exposed, with their act being condemned by an expert in alternative medicine. Edzard Ernst, Emeritus Professor at the University of Exeter, who has researched alternative medicine for 30 years, said; “It's all hocus pocus. It's nonsense, energy healing is dangerous when it's applied to cancer.”
But one so-called healer, who markets himself on Instagram and Facebook as a "black magic removal specialist and voodoo removal specialist", is “Pandith Ramdev”. He claims to “solve” health problems with his “expertise” in astrology and told a reporter he’d cured 50 to 60 people of serious health conditions in locations from Cornwall to Birmingham.
Another, who calls himself "Pandit: Ganaphati Raju", sees patients behind an orange sheet in a living room in the capital and hands out flyers south London promoting his services. When he was approached by a reporter, amid a six-month investigation, "Pandit: Ganaphati Raju" insisted he could deliver what doctors said was impossible. He told the undercover journalist: "100% for miracle," describing a way to reverse the "spell" with nine days of prayer at the cost of £900.
This man, who called himself Pandith Ramdev, was also exposed (Express investigations team)And, during an undercover video call with a reporter posing as a cancer patient, “Pandith Ramdev” promised to cure the illness for £3,000 and claimed to have been paid £21,000 to cure a patient with liver issues successfully in the past. He told the undercover Express.co.uk reporter: "I am there to give you a life like a newborn baby. I'm giving you strength today. I will fix your problem."
Warning as popular food and drink ‘increase risk of cancer death by up to 30%’
Dr Amanda Perren, a GP in south London, one area targeted by the likes of “Pandith Ramdev” and "Pandit: Ganaphati Raju", expressed deep concern over their actions. She told the Express.co.uk: "You can't just cure cancer with prayers and I think trying to sell that as an idea to vulnerable people is quite concerning. If you have stage four cancer, you can feel desperate and just want to feel better.
"You either need an operation or chemotherapy, that's a tough treatment course. So to have someone say with some prayers that they can treat you is quite upsetting because it's targeting people who are desperate and trying to just get money out of them. I think that's unforgivable."
The publication carried out a six-month probe on the practice of witch doctors across the UK. It says it is in the process of sharing all its findings with the relevant trading standards bodies for investigation.
