M&S is one of the best known brands on the high street with its luxury foods and delightful treats drawing customers all over the country. On top of that the store is also renowned for its their slightly quirky food items, such as Cronuts, Cruffins and Jar Cakes. However, M&S's latest attempt at a luxury hybrid item has not gone down quite so well, with many customers saying they plan to steer well clear of them while doing their food shop.

The store recently started to stock white strawberries - a striking take on the popular berry. On paper, they sound intriguing and delightful, but shoppers have been left baffled by them and question the taste.

Manchester Evening News reported they have a similar taste to pineapple and vanilla which sounds perfectly pleasant, but it's the look of them has left people in shock.

They can be found in stores across the country and cost £2 a punnet. Confused shoppers have taken to social media to voice their dislike of the new item with many asking the same question.

One person wrote: "I had to check it isn't 1st. April."

Another voiced a similar question: "Is it April 1st?"

A third penned: "They simply look like they're unripened don’t they? Can't say I'm tempted. The candy floss grapes that were a craze a few years ago were lovely though- so these could be hit or miss."

Somebody else wrote: "They look horrid and I bet they are tasteless. However, so are the red ones at this time of the year. No doubt someone with more money than sense will buy them but whatever happened to fruit and veg in season?"

However, not everyone was against them as the new item garnered some support. One wrote: "Nice to see something different, although I'm really a Raspberry person, strawberries always to sweet unless ground black pepper added to bring out flavour."

While another stated: "This is gold in Japan. I'm excited it's now available in the UK."
