Prince Harry had the full protection of the Royal Family’s security detail on his visit to see King Charles.

The Duke of Sussex flew from Los Angeles to London earlier this month after he was told in a private phone call that his father had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer. While Harry’s visit to see the monarch at Clarence House lasted less than 45 minutes, it has emerged he was given full protection from the family’s security team during his time in London, and even spent the night at the apartments at St James’ Palace while in the UK.

During a segment on TalkTV, royal expert Sarah Hewson explained that Harry is “always” covered by the royal security detail when he’s in the UK for “official duties”, and due to him being in London to see his father, the offer was extended to him, meaning the Duke of Sussex received the protection he had been requesting. It was also noted by host Ian Collins that Harry had “got the security he’d been asking for, but this would have been for specific reasons”, as he added that it was a “private engagement” with the King that sparked the increase in security.

“Now, of course he didn’t have the 28 days the Home Office said he would need to give notice of in order to put together a full security plan, but these are extraordinary circumstances that we find ourselves in, and the Royal Family find themselves in,” Sarah continued. “And I think it’s entirely right that Harry’s back and he’s given the level of security he needs to get from Heathrow Airport to visit his father,” she added. Sarah also noted that Harry received the same level of security protection when he was in the UK for his father’s coronation in May last year.

The news that the prince was given the full security protection comes as the 39-year-old awaits a ruling in his case against the Government in the High Court over the decision to change his level of personal security since leaving the Royal Family. Harry launched legal action against the Home Office after it was decided in 2020, just weeks after he and wife Meghan Markle relocated to the US, that he should receive a lower degree of protection from security personnel when in the UK.

Harry’s legal team claimed the decision that he had been “singled out” and treated “less favourably” after announcing he and Meghan would be stepping down from their roles as senior working royals, and moving to California. They alleged the decision has put Harry and his family, including his children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, at risk as they can’t “feel at home” in the UK if it is “not possible to keep them safe” there.
