Sweating is totally natural and after a long day you may start to notice your groin area smell more, but many do not realise where the smell could really be coming from.

If an intimate area smells funkier than usual, many women may think that it is coming from their vagina. Instead, a health expert has explained that the smell may be coming from skin folds around the crotch. Mary Futher, who is known as Madame Sweat, has raked in over 800,000 followers online for her tips and tricks regarding personal hygiene.

The 'clean beauty' lover says the number one thing that women say to aestheticians is "sorry about the smell", according to a video which raked in over 10,000 on Instagram. It is totally normal but Mary said there is a natural way to stop your crotch from smelling.

Explaining the reasoning for the smell, Mary explained: "Most of the time women worry that it's coming from the main stage when it is coming from the balcony. This is an area where there is very little air. This is an area that is enclosed with very little air, so often sweat between the skin folds, and that is when the odour starts to come."

Mary added: "We all have this problem. We're not walking around naked all day long. So we are wearing pants. We are wearing underwear. Well, I hope. In those cases sweat and bacteria can collect."

Mary said that she would recommend using a "something naturally antibacterial, not a chemical cocktail" and fragrance free, such as Tea Tree-based cleaning products. Mary commented: "I like Tea Tree because it disinfects down there. It says salicylic acid. It is extra efficient in that bikini area to keep odour at bay because of the antiseptic qualities."

Madame Sweat said the trick also works for underarms as well, and advises to wash 'down there' every single day to prevent bad smells. Commenting on the experts advice, an aesthetician said: "I'm an aesthetician and you can come in completely clean but if you start sweating from stress it will make the area smell instantly. Stress sweat smells."

One individual added: "I wear wool panties - game changer." Another advised: "A soap with tea tree might be good. I also use a natural deodorant with baking soda type sometimes in the summer in that area. And a corn starch based powder is good too to soak up sweat."

A holistic practitioner commented and said: "It is very important to wear 100% organic cotton against our skin. All those others synthetic garbage materials are actually affecting our hormones."

While smelling is totally normal the NHS warns an unusual odour may be a sign of bacterial vaginosis. A spokesperson said: "Some women may notice a change in the normal secretions from the vagina. This discharge will usually be white or grey, thin or watery and have a strong, unpleasant fishy smell. This can be more noticeable during and after sex, and during periods."

If you think you have bacterial vaginosis see the NHS website for more details or see your GP.
