De Jong's reaction to Weghorst's surprise Man Utd transfer speaks volumes

Long-term Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong has reached out to his Netherlands teammate Wout Weghorst following the striker's shock switch to Old Trafford.

Weghorst, 30, cut a season-long stint at Besiktas short last week in order to push through a move to United. The deal means the Burnley striker, who scored just twice after joining the Clarets from Wolfsburg last January, will spend the next six months back in the Premier League.

While Weghorst failed to make an impression with Burnley, who were relegated from the top-flight last term, he did catch the eye at the World Cup after netting twice in the Netherlands' quarter-final defeat against Argentina.

And De Jong, who played alongside Weghorst in that match, has now sent a message to his international team-mate after his move to Manchester United was confirmed over the weekend.

In a social media post, Weghorst said: "Can't wait to get started in 'The Theatre of my Dreams'. I will give my all for this incredible club @manchesterunited. Let's go Reds".

In response, De Jong commented with a starry-eyed face and a two-handed emoji praising the big striker for landing a dream move.

De Jong's comment on Weghorst's switch is likely to once again spark speculation that the Barcelona playmaker could be heading to Old Trafford himself in the near future - just months after a potential switch appeared to have broken down.

The 25-year-old was identified by Ten Hag as his priority summer transfer target after taking charge at United; however, De Jong was reluctant to entertain the idea of leaving Barcelona and made it clear that he was determined to fight for his future at the Nou Camp.

While De Jong's future is unclear with United still interested in a deal, Weghorst is set to lead the line for Erik ten Hag's side for the next few months. And the striker admitted that he was desperate to impress between now and the end of the season.

"I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United," Weghorst said after the move. "I've played against the club in the past and it's a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt. I've seen United's progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can't wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

"Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here. I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting involved straight away."
