Meghan Markle cooked traditional Afghan food with a group of refugees as part of her efforts to “uplift communities”.
A new video was released on her and Prince Harry’s website, showing the Duchess of Sussex wearing an apron and cooking alongside 15 women who settled in the US after fleeing Afghanistan. The Southern California Welcome Project initiative was created by Meghan in 2023 through the Sussexes charitable organisation the Archewell Foundation, and the short clip showcased the 42-year-old’s warm and caring side as she spent time with the women.
It was revealed earlier this month that Meghan had enjoyed an evening of “cooking and storytelling” with the Southern California Welcome Project, and in the video - which was posted on their website - Meghan looked happy and relaxed as she cooked traditional Afghan dumplings, including Ashak and Mantuu, in the session. The visit was also in partnership with Mina's List, which has worked with female activists and political leaders in Afghanistan since 2014.

She even wore an apron emblazoned with the name of her and Harry's foundation (Archewell Foundation)The organisation has helped evacuate and resettle over 2,000 Afghan women and families who have since started a new life in Southern California. It was reported that Meghan was inspired to set up the Welcome Project following her work with the Hubb Community Kitchen, which was created by some of the survivors of the devastating Grenfell Tower fire in west London.

In a press release alongside the video, it revealed that following the cooking session, Meghan sat down with the women to “discuss their personal stories”. The project was created last year by Harry and Meghan to support women, and was described as giving “access to critical resources and opportunities that not only supports the women participating in The Welcome Project, but also improves the lives of those around them - their families and their communities.”

Her latest public appearance marks somewhat of a comeback for Meghan (REX/Shutterstock)Her touching cookery session with the Afghan women comes just days after her surprise appearance via video link in London, as she opened the new wing of an animal welfare charity in honour of her late friend Oli Juste. The emotional speech, which was delivered from California, marked the opening of The Mayhew’s Oli Juste Wing, revealed Meghan was left devastated following the unexpected death of dog trainer Oli, who was a close friend of the Duchess. Meghan had been patron of the animal charity since 2019, but stepped down in 2022 after relocating to the US.
