There's nothing more unsightly than seeing mould in your home this time of year and it can be a nightmare to clean.

A survey by Warm This Winter found that 29 percent of the UK population have mould in their homes frequently or occasionally. The issue is caused by excess moisture inside buildings, which leads to the pesky fungus growing on ceilings, walls, and furniture. It can often occur if your room is poorly ventilated or has issues with dampness.

The problem can be even worse in bathrooms due to the hot steam from the shower. Each area of a bathroom needs to be handled differently to prevent damaging items and ruining paintwork.

When it comes to cleaning mould, many of us opt for a bottle of bleach - knowing it will kill the fungus quickly. However, according to an expert there is a much cheaper option which can "'scrub mould off without damaging surface".

Andy Ellis, bathroom expert at Posh.co.uk, said: "A small amount of mould around the shower can easily spread if nothing is done to clean it. Soon your walls, shower drain and even your window ledge may start to harbour the stubborn black fungus.

"It's important to be mindful about which products are going where to avoid damaging paintwork and tiles. We’ve put together a guide on how to clean different items around the bathroom with staple household items to eliminate the problem."

‌The bathroom expert says using lemons could be the perfect way to get mould off your shower screen. Not only is it super effective, but it will only set you back 30p - saving money where we can in the current financial climate is essential.

To remove mould with lemon you need to douse a sponge with it and scrub the screen in a circular motion - and voila!

Many household cleaning products can ruin the shower screen but using a 30p lemon can help scrub mould off without damaging the surface. Douse a sponge with the lemon and scrub the screen in a circular motion.

If you don't love the smell of lemon and want to try something different, Andy Ellis also advises that white vinegar acts as a great cleaner for getting mould of white walls. He also says putting a tablespoon of washing-up liquid onto an abrasive sponge and scrub the mould off the drains can keep away mould - rinse off with hot water afterwards to remove any residue.

The bathroom expert also advised: "Toilet mould can easily be removed by sprinkling baking soda on a toilet brush and giving it a hard scrub. Make sure to check all around the toilet bowl to remove all signs of mould and prevent a spread from happening."

One of the most common places people find mould is in their window sills. Using tea tree oil on cotton pad can help - dab it around the window ledge and on the glass itself. Leave it to rest overnight and wipe it down afterwards with a microfibre cloth.
