Couple renovating 1960s home stumble across treasure worth a 'small fortune'
A pair of new homeowners got more than they bargained for when they discovered a secret room in their house.
Renovating a property is no easy feat, but purchasing a house that needs a little bit of TLC and flipping it can save a huge amount of money. In fact, it has become an increasingly popular way for first-time buyers to get onto the property ladder.
Nicole Halliday and her partner dived into DIY straight away, after they received the keys for their 1960s - a house that was bought in 1962 for just £3.141 and is now worth hundreds of thousands. But during the long hours of stripping wood chipping wallpaper and demolishing walls, the couple unearthed what may be a small fortune.
In a TikTok video that has amassed more than 1.9 million views and hundreds of comments, Nicole shows just how much work is needed to renovate the home. There are heavy cracks on the wall, a 14-year-old boiler that they thought was new, and rotting floorboards due to leaks.
They discovered the previous owner's unique way of decorating, which consisted of 'layer upon layer of questionable wallpaper' and found live wires that weren't connected to anything. When they got rid of the 'monstrosity wardrobes', a hidden door to an extra room they didn't knew existed was revealed.
'I don't want children staying up late at weekends - I really need adult time'
But that wasn't the surprise everyone is talking about. When Nicole headed down to what she presumed would be a creepy, dark cellar - she laid her eyes on a hidden wine cellar. Around a dozen bottles of unopened wine can be seen in her video, gathering dust. Some viewers said she should return the booze back to the original owners - but others disagreed completely.

"Those red [wine bottles] from 1984 are like £140 a bottle each," one person said, while another joked they could use the money to buy a new boiler. "I'm low-key jealous of the wine," another commented. "You have to open a bottle when the house is finished to celebrate."
A fourth said: "At least the wine cellar was stocked, silver linings!" It appears that the range includes a Canepa Cabernet Sauvignon from Chile, and a French Les Hauts de Castelmaure Corbières. Prices of these wines can vary depending on their age, and whether they've been stored correctly. But if TikTok comments are anything to go buy, the couple could have over £1,000 sitting in their wine cellar.
