Getting your hair done can cost a pretty penny, so you would hope your time at the salon goes well and the end result is worth the money you spent.

And it turns out there's one thing that people can do to try and help achieve their desired style and colour.

Gareth Williams, Consumer Colourist at SALON64 in London has shared some of his top tips for appointments, including the mistake you should avoid making before you head out to the salon.

While many people may see no reason to wash their hair before an appointment, as they are going to have their hair washed by the professionals there, the expert claims the biggest blunder his customers make is going to get their hair done with greasy hair.

Williams continued to tell The Mirror that it would also be a mistake to arrive at a salon with hair that is too clean.

Instead, you want to aim for hair that's "not too clean, but it's definitely not greasy", perhaps washing your hair a day or two before your appointment, depending on your hair type.

He explained: "The reason it would be bad to arrive at the salon with greasy hair is that when you're applying colour to the hair you'll have to break through this grease as an initial barrier.

"When you have clean hair, this barrier isn't present, so the product can fully penetrate through the hair fibre and you'll be able to achieve the results you desire."

He went on to discuss the importance of washing your hair with water that's at the right temperature.

"One of the biggest mistakes people make when washing their hair is using water that's too hot," he said. "You want to make sure the water is tepid.

"When you're washing your hair, you're actually activating the sebaceous glands and using water that's too hot, or using a shampooing technique that's too vigorous on the hair fibre will actually cause the sebaceous glands to become reactive and therefore can make your hair greasy."

The expert went on to share a reminder to always use a heat protectant before blow drying your hair and again before using any heat styling tools, especially if you have coloured hair.

"Not using thermal protection can actually enable the colour to fade faster and make the hair become brassier quicker," Gareth added

"It can also cause overall irreparable damage to the hair fibre, so make sure you use thermal protection before blow drying or styling with heat tools to be fully protected."

This comes after fellow colourist, Luke Gregory, debunked the biggest misconception people have about hair appointments.

He explained that the comment "I know hairdressers don't like pictures but..." is nothing but a massive misconception.

"We LOVE pictures," he proclaimed. "They give us an insight into your thoughts and what you feel is warm/gold or cool/ash.

"Just manage expectations, it should always be said that we'll do our best or can do a variation of Holly Willoughby's beaut blonde."
