Bayern Munich will aim to appoint Liverpool target Xabi Alonso should they fire under-pressure Thomas Tuchel.

The former Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain boss has seen his job called into question after a rotten week at the Allianz Arena. Bayern have lost their last three games in all competitions and now look highly likely to relinquish the Bundesliga crown to Bayer Leverkusen.

Now, it is suggested that the German giants could turn to Alonso should they decide to do away with Tuchel. The Athletic report that Bayern are considering a change of manager, with former boss Hansi Flick taking over on an interim basis.

They would then make a move for Alonso in the summer. As it stands, Tuchel remains at the Allianz Arena despite the growing pressure.

CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed that they would not change manager, although the situation now appears to have changed. Speaking after Bayern’s latest defeat at the hands of Bochum, he said: “I feel rubbish. I don't believe in big statements about the coach. This issue isn't on our mind at the moment.”

Asked if Tuchel will still be in charge for their next game, he replied: “Of course.” His contract with Bayern is set to run until next summer.

Bayern would however face competition from Liverpool if they make a move for Alonso. After Jurgen Klopp’s bombshell exit announcement, Alonso was immediately installed as one of the favourites to replace the German.

Speaking about his potential successor, Klopp said: "The next generation is already there and I would say Xabi is a standout in that department. [He is a] former world-class player, from a coaching family as well, which helps a little, he was like a coach already when he was playing.

"The football he is playing, the teams he sets up, the transfers he did, it is absolutely exceptional. If you would have asked me eight weeks ago about Xabi Alonso, I would have gone 'Oh my God!' Always what I said.”

Alonso’s contract with current employers Leverkusen is valid until 2026. Away from Bayern and Liverpool, Real Madrid have also been linked with a move for him.
