Orchids are precious houseplants known for their beauty and fragrance, but they require extra care if you want them to bloom for longer.

Thankfully, one plant expert has shared her helpful tip. The colorful winter houseplants are renowned for their beauty and colours, and can instantly brighten up any home. However, it can be tricky to know exactly what your plant needs and you may find yourself worried when you notice its stems becoming yellow. While this doesn't always mean that an orchid is dying, it could be a signal for you to get it back to being happy and healthy.

Many orchids can be easy to grow if you take some time to learn what they need. It's important to know how often you'll need to water them and where to place them in your home but when you take good care of them, they can bloom for six to 10 weeks on average.

One avid orchid owner has shared her little-known secret to keep their houseplant "blooming constantly." The TikToker who posts under the content @kivakriti recommends people water their houseplants with banana peels. Firstly you need to take a banana peel and chop it into pieces. The next step is to soak the chopped banana peels in warm water and leave them in there for a few hours.

Afterward, use the water from the banana peel to feed your orchid and wait until all the water drains out. Kiva recommends following this process every 10 days to get the best results from this hack. According to Mark Curran, orchid expert and creator of the Heavenly Orchids blog, banana peel water is a "good organic fertiliser" as it contains potassium, phosphorus, and calcium.

If you want to keep your orchids in tip-top shape, Millie Durbak, Brand Manager at Prestige Flowers, adds that the ideal place your them should be your bathroom. "The bathroom provides the perfect setting for orchids due to its higher humidity levels and lower light conditions," she said. "These factors mirror the orchid's preferred environment, creating a perfect balance for optimal growth."

She continued: "Orchids, particularly the Phalaenopsis variety, excel in removing pollutants from the air. Placing them in the bathroom not only elevates the aesthetics but also contributes to a fresher and healthier indoor environment."
