Prince Harry fields questions on King Charles’ health in American TV interview

Prince Harry has opened up about his relationship with King Charles in a brand new tell-all interview and revealed he will be returning to the UK.

The Duke of Sussex appeared on Good Morning America and told host Will Reeve he is hoping for a full Royal Family reunion after his father was diagnosed with cancer. It's the first time the Duke of Sussex has spoken publicly about the monarch's diagnosis.

Harry confirmed he found out about Charles' cancer from the monarch himself. A source close to the Duke of Sussex previously told The Mirror : "The duke did speak with his father about his diagnosis."

The King was diagnosed with cancer after receiving hospital treatment for an unrelated issue. Harry refused to comment on the King's condition while speaking to the GMA host and said "that stays between me and him".

When asked how he found out about the King's condition, Harry explained: "I spoke to him." Will then asked: "And what did you do next?" Harry replied: "I jumped on a plane and went to go see him as soon as I could."

Harry said he feels lucky to have been able to visit his father following the diagnosis, having made a brief trip to London last week. He said: "Look I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go and see him and spend any time with him I'm grateful for that." When asked if the diagnosis could have a "reunifying effect" amid their feud, Harry said he is certain it will.

"Yeah, I'm sure. Throughout all these families I see it on a day-to-day basis the strength of the family unit coming together. I think any illness, any sickness brings families together," he told the host.

Elsewhere in the interview Harry discussed the possibility of becoming a US citizen. He laughed when Will asked if he "feels American" and replied with a firm "no" after considering the question. However, he did admit he "loves every single day" he spends living in America and said he "has considered" applying for citizenship". Harry said: "American citizenship is certainly a thought that has crossed my mind, but it's certainly not a high priority for me right now".

There have been plenty of questions surrounding Harry's potential US citizenship after he admitted to taking drugs in his memoir Spare. His revelations led to calls for his visa application to be released, so the American taxpayer can understand whether he declared his drug use.

Writing in his memoir, Harry revealed he had dabbled with marijuana, magic mushrooms, ayahuasca, and cocaine in order to try and deal with the death of his mum, Princess Diana. There was speculation that the Duke of Sussex, who resides in California with his family, could be denied US citizenship if he ever applied, as the variety of drugs he admitted to taking are banned or under strict control.

Despite calls for his visa application to be released, US government lawyers determined it should not be disclosed because it is "private personal information". Harry's references to taking drugs prompted a conservative Washington DC think tank to question why he was allowed into the States in 2020.

The Duke of Sussex also spoke with one Ukrainian soldier while being interviewed by Will. The soldier told Harry: "I am here to help my brothers who are currently wounded in Ukrainian hospitals." After listening to the soldier, Harry admitted it had "stirred the emotions". He added: "It's not lost on me, it's not lost on any of us the thousands of Ukrainians that are being injured now."

Harry also spoke about what the Invictus Games bring to everyone involved and spoke passionately about his time supporting "wounded warriors". Harry told Will: "It's not just about the individual. Everyone pays attention, rightly so, to the person who's been injured but once that person gets injured, actually the whole family gets injured because their whole lives are changed, turned upside down forever.

"You've got to provide the resources and the opportunities and the platform for them to be able to heal themselves because if they heal themselves, then the whole family heals. To me, that is without doubt the most rewarding piece to all of this."

During Harry's interview with GMA, he also gushed about his children and praised Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet for keeping him "grounded". Host Will Reeve quizzed him about how he's doing as "Harry the dad" and the Duke of Sussex joked: "I can't tell you, that's classified," before adding: "The kids are doing great. The kids are growing up like all kids do, very, very fast. They've both got an incredible sense of humour and make us laugh and keep us grounded every single day."

He added: "I'm just very grateful to be a dad." Harry's GMA interview comes after he recently spent time in the UK to visit his father following the monarch's cancer news. The Duke of Sussex rushed to the UK from Los Angeles last week and sat down for a half an hour chat with the King during his visit. It's believed this was their first proper private conversation for 15 months.

Harry was not joined by his wife for the visit, as she decided to remain in Montecito, California, with their two children. It's been reported that Harry did not see his older brother Prince William during his brief return to the UK.

A source previously told The Mirror there was "nothing in the diary" for them to meet, with William reportedly focusing completely on Princess Kate's surgery recovery at the moment. Harry returned to Los Angeles on Wednesday, having spent just over 24 hours in the UK.

However, it looks like he could be about to return to London again in a matter of weeks. Harry is tipped to travel back in May for the 10th birthday of the Invictus Games. Celebrations are due to take place at St Paul’s Cathedral.

The news comes after the UK government announced a multi-million-pound bid to see the games hosted in Birmingham in 2027. A source close to the project said a British-based Invictus Games would have the approval of both Harry and the rest of the Royal Family. "Harry has indicated that he is comfortable coming back for a British-based Invictus Games and we understand that the Games have always had the support of the rest of the Royal Family," they told The Express.
