Prince Harry was uncomfortable during his whirlwind trip to the UK to see his father King Charles.

The 39-year-old travelled to London earlier this month to be by the side of the monarch, just hours after Charles told Harry in a private phone call that he had been diagnosed with cancer. The father-of-two boarded an overnight flight from Los Angeles to London, and was whisked straight to Clarence House to meet with his father following his health news.

However, Harry was on his way back to the US after less than 24 hours in England, and his meeting with his father lasted around 30 minutes. The Duke of Sussex ’s trip sparked speculation that his estranged relationship with Charles was starting to mend, and it was reported that the monarch was touched by his youngest son’s decision to come and see him.

Harry travelled to the UK without wife Meghan Markle and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, and according to Us Weekly, the solo trip back was “tough” for the prince, as he found it hard to be away from his family. Another insider told the magazine that Harry was unhappy with the furore surrounding his return to London, and cut his trip short because of the negative press he received. The brief trip was “primarily due to the discomfort Harry feels in that environment”, and he was keen to get back to Meghan and their kids.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior working royals in January 2020, and relocated to the US after facing a serious backlash over their decision to distance themselves from the monarchy. The estrangement between Harry and his family, in particular King Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton, grew substantially after he and Meghan sat down for a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021.

The prince then reportedly agitated his family members with his explosive memoir Spare, released in January last year, as Harry made a series of allegations against brother William, as well as detailing his childhood growing up in the Royal Family. The “amicable and warm” meeting between Harry and his father was an indication that a reconciliation is on the cards, as both the prince and the king believe “life is too short” and want to “repair the rift”.

The source claimed Charles has been “eager to make up with Harry for a while”, and the reunion was “emotional”. The prince had the full support of his wife Meghan, who was “in total agreement” that he should jump on a plane and see his father following news of his cancer diagnosis. And the Duchess of Sussex has already contacted Charles and Kate, who was also hospitalised last month for major abdominal surgery, and it’s speculated that the recent health woes will bring the estranged family back together again.
