Netflix viewers have been left in tears by the new romantic drama series One Day, based on David Nicholls' popular book.

The show follows the slow-burning love story of Dexter Mayhew (played by Leo Woodall) and Emma Morley (Ambika Mod) across 14 episodes. However, just as the lead pair finally realise they're soul mates and make their longtime friendship official, Emma dies in a shocking twist.

Emma, who is riding her bike at the time, collides with a car, bringing Dex and Em's love story to a tragic and premature end. Fans were devastated after becoming wholly invested in the romance, which follows posh boy Dex and studious Em over 20 years from their graduation night. After enduring trials and tribulations, family heartbreak after Dex's mum sadly dies of cancer, and failed relationships, many were upset that the couple had already faced enough.

Despite the popular novel already having a big-screen adaptation in 2011, featuring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, younger viewers were caught off guard by the heartbreaking twist. "Well One Day just rudely stabbed me in the heart then ripped it out and stomped on it. Cheers for that," tweeted one wounded viewer on X, previously known as Twitter.

Another poster lamented: "THE ENDING?? Who put rom-com under One Day are you actually kidding? Crying myself to sleep what the actual hell," A third wrote: "Put #OneDay on because I thought it'd be a cute romcom (I've not read the book or seen the film) Boy was I wrong!!!! I'm in tears."

Many viewers wished that producers had elected to steer clear of David Nicholls' tragic ending. "There's absolutely no reason #OneDay had to end like that. Ahh," one fan insisted.

"it's been over 12 hours since finishing #OneDay and i'm still thinking about it instead of getting on with my day #OneDayNetflix #oneday," another confessed. Nicole Taylor, the show's creator and writer, spoke about her decision to retain the original ending, revealing there was "a lot of thought" about making changes.

Chatting with The Wrap, Nicole said, "I went into this, wanting to reflect on and sort of interrogate whether that was still the ending that we wanted. I thought that was a reasonable thing to do. I was thinking about other endings, but fundamentally, that ending is stitched into the work as a whole. The story kind of has its own thematic integrity, it has its own structural integrity."

"I feel like the overall meaning of the piece requires that, and I felt like any changing of the ending would be gratuitous and undermine the overall impact of the piece so I think it was the right thing to have a good think about it, question it and not just take it as given," Nicole added.
